SWMMBA Meeting Minutes 3/19/14

Meeting was called to order at 6:08 PM at KRESA in Portage, MI. In attendance: Travis Bell, Rick McIntosh, Meg Zaplowski, Charlene Orwat, Amy Simmons, Gordie Allen, Andy Gray, Brian Orwat and Tony Trojanowski. All board members present. In response to resignation of Pat Bagi as past president, Mike Needham will be asked to assume those duties.

After sign in was complete, the agenda was amended to reflect the addition of MMBA report. February minutes were reviewed and found to be acceptable and therefore approved.

MONTHLY REPORTS:

Membership: Individual membership stands at 128, 10 family memberships, 14 still pending from most recent drive. An updated list will be forwarded to Amy for mailings, etc. (ACTION ITEM). Travis and Meg plan to visit various bike shops & introduce themselves as new president & vice president (ACTION ITEM). Meg has been contacting bike shops to “plug” SWMMBA. The suggestion of hang tags on bikes in shops was again brought up. Upcoming events that would be opportunities for membership drives include the Openroad.org event on April 12th and the Kalamazoo bike film festival May 13TH.

Treasurer: A slight decrease in balance due to the payment of insurance premiums since last meeting.

Communications: Posting of previous months’ minutes onto website remains a work in progress. PayPal link on website for contributions to a designated trail building account also remains in progress. Amy has agreed to send an email to members re: information about VO2 testing. Bike friendly families are being sought for exchange students.

MMBA: Each MI chapter has the opportunity to be represented at the state level. Gordie is the acting representative for SWMMBA. He is actively seeking a protégé to mentor.

TRAIL REPORTS:

FORT CUSTER:

DNR report was submitted by Tony Trojanowski and appears as an addendum at the end of the minutes. ACTION ITEMS: Gordie will provide Tony whatever additional information necessary to complete the sign project. Travis will let Dan know to cease with winter trail grooming.

ADOPT A TRAIL: Andy & Gordie are working on an informational packet for volunteers, outlining what the expectations & limitations are. There are 11 sections available for adoption by groups or individuals. Information will passed along to members via FB, website and/or email newsletter

STAMPEDE: Maple Hill has been verified as title sponsor. Additional sponsors include Keller, Gazelle, Team Active & Eaton. Old mill Pub will supply beer & staff. Additional details being worked out by stampede committee.

MTB 101: Charlene & Brian are continuing to develop the program. Dates were suggested as well as content of group ride and participant requirement. Additional details to follow.

MARKIN GLEN: Committee update included board approval status & budget. Working to get allotment of money from budget set aside for trail building. SWMMBA fund raising for trail development remains a work in progress.

OLD BUSINESS:

INSURANCE UPDATE: SWMMBA has obtained individual insurance. Will continue to pursue alternatives via IMBA or otherwise for subsequent years

Team Active end of winter party & Ice Man registration at Bell’s were recent membership drive opportunities that proved worthwhile

Melting Mann inaugural annual race was well attended. Not a lot of vendors present at event, hoping to set up a table at next year’s event to represent SWMMBA.

IMBA Trail Care Crew scheduled for June has been postponed till spring 2015

NEW BUSINESS:

Survey remains on website for review.

Social activity ideas being considered include a host a movie night showing Leadville 100, hosting an appreciation social for members, professional biker to speak at event, offering food to trail work volunteers after trail days. Any & all suggestions are welcome.

COMMENTS/QUESTIONS:

A SWMMBA pop-up tent for use at various functions was suggested. Travis & Amy will look into obtaining pricing

Meeting was adjourned at 8:04 PM. Next meeting April 16 at KRESA.
